I guess it makes him more sympathetic to show fans which is fine, but no

Lord Eddard had tried to play the father from time to time, but to Theon he had always remained the man who’d brought blood and fire to Pyke and taken him from his home. As a boy, he had lived in fear of Stark’s stern face and great dark sword. His wife was, if anything, even more distant and suspicious.

Theon may have thought of Robb as a brother, but Ned always represented fear to him 

Precisely this.

There are also moments when Theon compared himself with Jon Snow in the book - about him not belonging in Winterfell, and the reason he went back to Pyke in the first place was to help his father and house Greyjoy to return to its former glory. He did say that he thought of Robb as a brother more than his real brothers of which have been killed - and Balon didn’t waste any time to remind Theon of that, blaming Ned and everything - but he never claimed Ned as his ‘real father’ or anything alike.
